Lucky Clover 5K Recap

It was a beautiful day at Dorris Ranch in Springfield, Oregon the sun was out it was nice and cool we were ready to race.

That’s right WE! I was joined by one of the youth from our group and his dad. Jake and Brad Bailey drove all the way over to Springfield, about 2 1/2 hours, just for a 30 minute race! NOW THAT’S DEDICATION!

So now to the race. At the Lucky Clover there are options, you can run a “flat” trail run or a road course with “hills”. Naturally, the team chose the “flat” trail run. What we didn’t think about was the fact it had been raining for a couple of days. The trail was soft, to say the least. There were times when we ran on gravel, times on leaves through a beautiful filbert orchard (that’s hazelnuts for those not from Oregon). We ran in flat our mud, over limbs, creeks and finally up a HILL. That’s right a HILL, a single track muddy, hill with switchbacks.

We started out pretty fast running the first mile in 9:05. Then I made a mistake. I stopped and walked for about 50 feet at the water stop about half way in. I think if I had continued to run I could have kept up my pace but with that slow down I couldn’t catch back up to both the Baileys, who just happen to be serious about running.

Both Baileys finished in just over 29 minutes. I finished in 31:48, my goal was under 30 minutes and I think if it had been dry I could of, but it was fun, different and we got several comments about our matching purple shirts. Hopefully they’ll find this blog and help us reach our goal of $10,000 for the year.

I wanted to give a big shout out to the Eclectic Edge Racing. This event was great on so many levels. The people at registration were helpful, friendly and inviting. The trail was well marked and in great shape (given the circumstances), the award ceremony was timely and entertaining, the refreshments were great (However, they could have used donuts, every race should have donuts at the end…IMHO).
